Dad’s support weekend: connection, reflection and renewal

Bear Cottage’s Family Support Programs create opportunities for every member of the family to connect, take time out, and be supported by others who truly understand. Our Dad’s Support Weekend is open to both bereaved and non-bereaved fathers, providing a safe and supportive space for dads who are navigating the many demands of caring for a seriously ill child, supporting their partner and family, balancing employment, and looking after their own wellbeing.

Our most recent Dad’s Support Weekend was a truly special and meaningful experience. Across the weekend, dads shared time together through a restorative yoga session, kayaking on the harbour, a theatre outing, and a gentle candle reflection. Each activity offered space for connection, rest and reflection in a supportive and understanding environment.

By coincidence, the weekend aligned with the 10th anniversary of one dad’s daughter’s death. During an art therapy session, he created a deeply moving piece featuring white butterflies as a symbol of his daughter’s presence. Four white butterflies were placed around her photo to represent her siblings, beautifully reflecting the ongoing connection within their family. In a poignant moment, a white butterfly appeared during the yoga session in the garden, adding another layer of meaning to the experience.

What the dads shared

“The weekend was something I really needed. Being with a group of other dads that can properly relate to what you go through is something you can’t get day to day. The whole experience was great – a nice balance of time with the group to talk, mixed with fun activities. Being on site at the Cottage with people who know us, and our families really makes it work so well, as there’s a comfort factor from the start.”

“I’m so grateful to Bear Cottage for this weekend and the ongoing support of my daughter. The location is very special to me, as it really shows holistic care for the whole family, not just the kids.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this weekend so gentle, supportive and full of meaning.

Bear Cottage’s Family Support Programs would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters. Thank you to Four Pines Brewing Co, Manly Kayaks, Abundant Sky and Corporate Bodies for helping us create experiences like this for families in our care.
