Discussing cause of death

The reason for your child’s death will have been discussed with you by the Bear Cottage doctor or other specialists.

The doctor may suggest an autopsy (details below).

It may be difficult to understand and remember all of the information given to you at such a distressing time.

After you leave Bear Cottage you may think of further questions or want an opportunity to talk to us again.

Just contact us and we'll help arrange this for you.

What is an autopsy?

An autopsy is an examination by medical experts of internal organs, including tests, to help define the cause of your child’s death.

This may provide other information that could be useful to your family and other families in the future.

This procedure is done very carefully and respectfully.

Consent and requesting an autopsy

Your consent is required for an autopsy to be performed. The decision does not have to be made immediately and you can take your time to discuss it with members of your family.

If you are thinking you may like an autopsy please discuss this with staff as early as possible.
